Transfer files from Android to Mac without Android File Transfer

A Mac does not see an Android phone the way a Windows PC does, so the usual answer is another app and a cable. Skip both: pick the files in Chrome on the phone and enter the code in Safari on the Mac.

Why Android and a Mac do not get along over a cable

Android phones share their storage over USB using MTP, which Windows understands out of the box and macOS does not. That is why Mac owners end up installing a bridge — Google’s old Android File Transfer app, OpenMTP, MacDroid or something similar — and why the connection can be temperamental with some phones and cables.

A browser transfer avoids the protocol question entirely. The phone uploads, the Mac downloads, and neither needs to know what the other is.

When the Mac is not yours

A shared family iMac, a work MacBook with locked-down software installs, a friend’s laptop: installing a USB bridge on any of them is a big ask for one file. Safari is already there.

When a cable app is still the better choice

Moving thousands of photos, or hours of video? A USB tool such as OpenMTP suits that better: it has no 25 MB cap and does not depend on your upload speed. Here each drop holds up to 25 files and 100 MB, which is the everyday handful — quicker to reach for, and nothing to install.

FAQ

Android to Mac — common questions

Do I need Android File Transfer on my Mac?

Not for this. Nothing is installed on the Mac or on the phone — the transfer runs in the browser on both ends.

Can I transfer from Android to a MacBook wirelessly?

Yes. The phone uploads over wifi or mobile data, and the MacBook downloads over its own connection. They do not need to be on the same network, or paired.

Can I go the other way, from Mac to Android?

Yes, and it is quicker still: create the drop on the Mac and scan its QR code with the phone’s camera.

Are the files compressed?

No. The Mac downloads exactly the bytes the phone uploaded.
